Mercury. Not exactly the most entertaining of planets, but certainly one of the most peaceful. With the atmospheric generator setting up a heat and pressure field around where he sat outside the TARDIS, it was actually quite nice.

He had two white wicker chairs and a table set up outside the TARDIS, with a pot of tea and two cups and saucers out.

After all, he had a date arriving.

Well, not really a date.

Just Romana.

Still! No reason not to put a little effort out!

She kissed him firmly and he returned the kiss in kind. His hands wasted no time: one snaked around her waist while the other tangled itself in her wet hair. Passion like this was something he rarely felt let alone expressed, but this was so different. So very, very different.

She had always been the one who got away. Always.

And they had danced around each other for so very long in the past.

From: [identity profile] tastefulfashion.livejournal.com

Both of her hands slid up his arms, gripping his shoulders as they kissed. It was filled with words unspoken. Secrets they both wanted to share.

Her chest against his she could feel both sets of beating hearts. Deepening the kiss it was easy to see that she was clinging to him as if the very idea of her letting go would be the end of everything.

For all intents and purposes, it would be. It would be the end. She would go and he would never be able to see her, ever.

He wasn't about to make this a kiss goodbye. He didn't like goodbye kisses at all. He had to figure out a way to make her stay. To convince her that his timeline with her was the best timeline. He could work out a way to hold it up, to keep time from collapsing. It wasn't selfish, he was saving her.

He cursed his brain for continuing to move at full speed, not allowing him to focus entirely on her.

This kiss felt different than the others. More intense, more desperate. He clung to that, to that desperation he felt.

From: [identity profile] tastefulfashion.livejournal.com

All those years they had spent traveling together, constantly arguing and teasing one another, saving each other from that loneliness that waited for them - they were one of the few things she could look back on whenever she had doubted even herself in those rare moments of her life.

She spoke his name once more, but her tone had changed from a shy whisper to huskier need. Desperation was taking its hold and she did nothing to resist it, fingers curling around the collar of his jacket.

Parting her lips and tilting her head ever so slightly to the left, Romana said his name again. It felt right, just saying it.

Edited Date: 2008-03-10 05:12 am (UTC)

From: [identity profile] rude-not-ginger.livejournal.com

She spoke his name and he murmured hers, pressing a kiss to her jawbone. Well, she was tilting her head, that must mean she was directing him where she wanted to be kissed next. It was a reasonable assumption in his mind. Another kiss, this one a little lower down her throat, and another.

There were boundaries. Boundaries he set up and was completely ignoring. It was intentional irresponsibility and he should've despised himself for it.

But from the way she said his name? He couldn't figure out how.

From: [identity profile] tastefulfashion.livejournal.com

There was wrong, there was irresponsibility, there was irrational thinking and then there was this. Clearly at this point even the most common of sense had taken a short leave of absence when his lips kissed her throat.

A hand releasing his jacket was soon holding on the console of the TARDIS behind her, her other hand entangling in his hair.

It was silly of her to let this escalate as quickly as it was. It was just supposed to be a simple outing with an old friend. Oh how this veered off the course of normality.

"Mmm..."

From: [identity profile] rude-not-ginger.livejournal.com

This was really not the gentlemanly thing to do. There was the gentlemanly thing to do, then there was kissing Romana's neck as she leaned against the console. This was the rather forward thing to do. Thinking things like 'What would it hurt?' were the sort of things Jack did! He was far from Jack...he was!

He couldn't just...well, he couldn't exactly stop, either. Not with the sounds she was making, they were too fascinating.

Still, he found his voice just enough to try to explain. "I...I don't...I don't normally..." Explaining was really overrated, and he kissed her again.

From: [identity profile] tastefulfashion.livejournal.com

The Doctor behaving normally is usually abnormal. And his behavior now... well, she would be one talk more than anything. For years she had wondered what it was that she felt for him. he was just her teacher in the beginning, that was all.

"Really, now..." she began, the tiniest bit breathless, "You-- "

But whatever it was she was going to say was effectively silenced with that kiss.

Now... it was proving to be something of a challenge to maintain a coherent thought when it was so much easier to focus on his feverish kisses and keeping as close as she could to him.

From: [identity profile] rude-not-ginger.livejournal.com

He needed to stop thinking so much. All the thinking just made things more complicated. Instead, he should just enjoy the moment...whereever it was leading!

Where was it leading?

Why wouldn't his brain shut off??

He pulled back again, just barely, his lips grazing hers. "Don't go, Romana." A breath. "I want you to stay."

From: [identity profile] tastefulfashion.livejournal.com

And she wanted to stay as well. To hear him ask that of her made it all the more harder for her to think of telling him she just couldn't.

"Gallifrey needs me, Doctor," she said. "I have to go back in time, don't you see?"

They were so close. She had allowed herself to let down her guard around him.

"But until then I can be here."

From: [identity profile] rude-not-ginger.livejournal.com

"I need you."

It was probably something he should've said back at the Gate. No, it was definitely something he should've said back at the Gate. He should've told her not to go and he should've fought her decision to leave him tooth and nail, eventually holding onto one ankle so she couldn't walk away.

"I need you, you know, to be here and criticize my choice in footwear."

He smiled, and brushed her nose gently with his.

From: [identity profile] tastefulfashion.livejournal.com

He needed her. And whether she wanted it to be or not, a part of her needed him too.

"You know as well as I that you wouldn't listen anyway."

But still, it was impossible to resist smiling back at him, chuckling even, at the thought of criticizing his shoes and clothing. A hand brushed gently against his check before settling on his shoulder.

"I would have to go through your wardrobe to make sure your shoes were sensible."

"Of course."

There were other things he wanted to say. Things he had in his head that he had to say, to convince her not to go. Words he wasn't exactly fantastic at saying.

He kissed her again, very gently. He figured he could easily make kissing Romana a habit. What a wonderful habit it would be. Strange, perhaps, if he put it on his Facebook account under "hobbies", but it would be good.

From: [identity profile] tastefulfashion.livejournal.com

And given just how many regenerations he had thus far, she half wondered if it were even possible to rummage through his wardrobe in its entirety. Who knows what he still had kept - more than likely all those scarves to begin with.

She had quickly become accustomed to the kisses in time they had spent together now. Each one seemed to always be different from the last. A different emotion, a different message with each time they kissed. Her own kisses were soft and brief as if teasing him still.

From: [identity profile] rude-not-ginger.livejournal.com

She teased, he teased. They danced around each other even more. It was obvious practically from the time she sat brushing her hair and smirking at him that there was something between them. Now, finally, they were admitting it.

"I need you more than Gallifrey does," he might've said the words with a childlike pout, but considering their closeness he decided against it. "And all of Gallifrey won't...you know, argue with you as lovingly as I will."

From: [identity profile] tastefulfashion.livejournal.com

"Gallifrey may not be as such... but to leave everything behind, I couldn't do that," she answered in a soft tone. "I have responsibilities to uphold."

It would not be like her to simply throw aside all that she worked so hard to attain for the better of Gallifrey. It was difficult, though. She had no desire to leave him yet. Resting her cheek against his chest Romana wrapped her arms around his waist, taking comfort in his presence.

From: [identity profile] rude-not-ginger.livejournal.com

"I did," he said, and it was completely true. On more than one occasion. "Couldn't go back now, even if I wanted to."

That was true, though not for the same reasons. He couldn't tell her those reasons, what he said was more than enough. And what could she do but try to prevent him?

Prevention. Wait.

His face lit up and he pulled back just slightly. "Let me show you something."

From: [identity profile] tastefulfashion.livejournal.com

"But Gallifrey has changed! The Academy was opened to all races to learn an- "

Looking up as her words were cut off, Romana only stared at him with curious intent. Her embrace loosened when he pulled away.

"What is it?"

From: [identity profile] rude-not-ginger.livejournal.com

"Now, it wouldn't be a surprise if I just told you, would it?"

He offered her his hand.

"Come on, I'll show you."

From: [identity profile] tastefulfashion.livejournal.com

Her hand was small compared to his, taking it after a slight moment of hesitation.

"You're always full of surprises, Doctor."

From: [identity profile] rude-not-ginger.livejournal.com

"I do my best."

He led her down the corridors of the TARDIS, past the companion rooms and the brass bath to a large wooden door that stood out awkwardly among the coral of the rest of the TARDIS.

It was his bedroom, of course. He opened the door and the lights immediately turned on. The room was wood and brass, reflecting years of staying the same way while the rest of the TARDIS remodeled or changed. The wall was lined with clocks of varying planetary origin set to a thousand different timezones. On one end sat a washing-up station with a sink and a strop, the other end held several bookshelves and a variety of calendars. His four-poster bed stood neatly made at one corner, but he headed for the desk at the other end, covered in papers with books stacked nearly to the ceiling.

He ruffled through the papers a bit, then checked in the drawer before he found what he was looking for, a tiny gold locket on a fine chain.

"For you."

From: [identity profile] tastefulfashion.livejournal.com

A wry smile tugged at the corner of her lips. "It isn't very hard for you, really..."

She had to admit to admiring his bedroom. More often it was he that would come barging into her room rather than the other way around. Once or twice she had come in here if only to find a book missing from the library shelves that she needed to read.

When she saw the necklace in his hand, however, she could only gaze at it, surprised. "It's... it's beautiful!"

From: [identity profile] rude-not-ginger.livejournal.com

He grinned widely at her and gestured for her to approach.

"If I have to send you back," he said, "Might as well send you back with something. You know, to remember me in case it's a while until we see each other."

A fact he tucked away in his mind would not happen.

From: [identity profile] tastefulfashion.livejournal.com

"That's rather thoughtful of you, Doctor," Romana finally spoke, walking over to him.

The necklace really was beautiful. Simple, but beautiful.

From: [identity profile] rude-not-ginger.livejournal.com

"Well, I'm trying to be more thoughtful in my old age," he said. As she approached he moved behind her to clasp the necklace around her neck. The chain was very fine Ferulian dwarfgold, so while it was strong it was still quite dainty.

He brushed her hair to the side and placed the chain against the back of her neck as he locked it.
