Having someone wonder where you are when you don't come home at night is a very old human need. ~Margaret Mead

She's out at some slumber party.

It's a reasonable thing, of course. Slumber parties generally mean slumbering which generally means not slumbering where you usually slumber. And she's surrounded by her most mature female friends, so he really has very little to worry about, he thinks.

He sips his coffee and leans against the door to the TARDIS. He can wait a little longer.

Silly thing, worrying about her. It's not like she can't take care of herself.

Still, he sits outside the TARDIS in the warm spring night. Waiting for her to come home.

Is this what she'd want? Him waiting for her?

Maybe.

It is very human to want someone to care. He wonders if she wants him to care.

And he does, ridiculously enough. The thought of sleeping (even sleeping off his obvious drunken state) feels wrong, not without Rose sleeping in the room across the hall. He can wait a little longer.

Where is she?

This is ridiculous.

She'll be back soon. He thinks about his warm bed back inside the TARDIS, then takes another sip of coffee. He can wait a little longer.

After all, if the positions were reversed, he'd want her to wait for him.

He wonders how human that makes him.

Fairly human, he thinks.

He goes back inside to pour himself another cup of coffee, then comes back out.

It's nearly sunrise. He can wait a little longer.

Following this and this...

It was a pleasant evening. He showed her around his childhood home (much like the TARDIS, it was larger on the inside), they had tea, and he eventually sent her off to her own bedroom. He considered kissing her good-night but opted against it. It would feel too much like goodbye.

He didn't sleep, of course. Too much to do and all that. By the time he slipped away from the house, one of the twin suns was just starting to touch the horizon.

In a pile on the kitchen table is a crude tattooing kit and a copy of the pentagram that Sam had shown him, along with some mechanical odds and ends showing only that the Doctor was working on something.

On the main table, however, is an oddly-shaped key, a card, and a silver disc. When pressed, the silver disc transmits a holographic image of the Doctor, recorded the night before. He looks rumpled and very tired.

"Hello, Rose. No doubt you're probably positively furious at me, am I right? Shouting at this holographic image isn't going to do you any good, I can't possibly hear you, so don't waste your breath. Still, a promise is a promise and I did promise Sam and Dean that I would help so off I'm going back to Earth. But not you. No, you're staying here, where it's safe. I promised Jackie I'd take care of you and yes, yes, she's in another universe but if anyone could reach across universes and slap me, it's Jackie Tyler so I'm not risking it."

Clearly agitated, the holographic image of the Doctor scratches its head.

"Right! Right, things I've left you. Left you the key to this house, though I don't imagine you'll be here for more than a few days at the most, and a card with some credit units on it. Don't spend it all on sweets and don't try to sound some sort of alarm, you have to keep a low profile, do you understand? Even if you're blindingly furious at me, don't waste your chance to live. Please, Rose."

The holographic image sighs.

"The TARDIS is programmed to come back here to get you upon my death. If something happens to me, I'm not going to just leave you on a strange planet. The TARDIS will arrive, it'll pick you up and take you anywhere you want to go. Now, I'm not going to try to die, I'll do my verybest to stay alive. But just in case, you know you're taken care of. I know you're taken care of."

He takes a breath and chews on his cheek.

"There are so many places I want to take you. Things I want to…if something happens to me, I'll regenerate and probably be just fine. Or at the very least I'll be terribly heroic and create some sort of mythology, am I right? If something happens to you, Rose…I won't let anything happen to you."

It's as probably close to 'I love you' as he can get.

"So. Be safe." He grins rather stupidly. "Wish me luck."

The image fizzles out.

So, as a "How Well Do You Know Your Spouse"…thing, I was asked to fill out this questionnaire about Rose and then about myself to compare/contrast how well we know each other. Clearly, as you'll see, I know her very well. Very well! I pay attention! I really do!

Here is Rose's response.

Cut for the length of this ridiculous test. )

There's something about this day
That feels a lot like yesterday
Everything looks the same:
The wall, the tv set
The way I move around myself to be
Somewhere over there
Where things just seem to grow
Where somebody seems to know
What they want from me

I never felt like I belonged
To anything or anyone
Still I depend on you
For every single thing
I could be wrong about so much, but
Somewhere over there
Where things just seem to grow
Where somebody seems to know
What they want from me

Following this.

He won the argument, he realized.

She was somewhere else, off in her room. He was in the drive plate room, not even going into the console room out of fear that she'd be right there.

He supposed that spoke volumes all into itself. )

To the Doctor, the argument is moot. Battle between humans and whatever those things are. A war. There is very little in the universe he despises more than war. Bus stations, burnt toast, then war. He isn't entirely fond of unrequited love, either, but war is worse. And Rose wants to go fight. It simply isn't happening.

'I won't see you hurt, Rose,' he says, firmly. )

The planet of Zelmenox.

Lovely place. Streets were lined with rubies, literally. It seemed like the right sort of place to take Rose Tyler for a trip. Land somewhere within the principal city of Vertias, have some lunch and wander around a bit.

Really, though, now that the Doctor thinks about it, he should've taken at least a brief glance at the books he had on Zelmenoxian law before landing there. Not twenty minutes after they started wandering, they were approached by one of the half-horse aliens (a police officer, in fact) and asked if they'd taken the Vertian Supplement, required of all citizens and visitors.

The correct answer was "no" and the Doctor was regretting saying that. Now, they sat in a Vertian cafe, looking over some of the custom guides to figure out exactly what they'd been injected with.

"It's a truth-telling serum," the Doctor announced, looking over the edge of his glasses at his companion. "To try to sort out the 'primary question of the universe'. Whatever that could be."
1. Who eats more?
Probably her. Or me. I don't know, it really depends on the situation. Chips? Her. Xeurixian takeout? Me.

2. Who said "I love you" first?
Her.

3. How long have you been together?
Well, we met in 2005, and there was a year there where the TARDIS missed the mark, and you get sort of timeless in the TARDIS, don't you? All that hopping about in time, and then...it's been a while, let's just say.

4. Who sings better?
Oh, definitely me.

Cut for length...why is this so long?? )
