Mercury. Not exactly the most entertaining of planets, but certainly one of the most peaceful. With the atmospheric generator setting up a heat and pressure field around where he sat outside the TARDIS, it was actually quite nice.

He had two white wicker chairs and a table set up outside the TARDIS, with a pot of tea and two cups and saucers out.

After all, he had a date arriving.

Well, not really a date.

Just Romana.

Still! No reason not to put a little effort out!

He needed her. And whether she wanted it to be or not, a part of her needed him too.

"You know as well as I that you wouldn't listen anyway."

But still, it was impossible to resist smiling back at him, chuckling even, at the thought of criticizing his shoes and clothing. A hand brushed gently against his check before settling on his shoulder.

"I would have to go through your wardrobe to make sure your shoes were sensible."

"Of course."

There were other things he wanted to say. Things he had in his head that he had to say, to convince her not to go. Words he wasn't exactly fantastic at saying.

He kissed her again, very gently. He figured he could easily make kissing Romana a habit. What a wonderful habit it would be. Strange, perhaps, if he put it on his Facebook account under "hobbies", but it would be good.

And given just how many regenerations he had thus far, she half wondered if it were even possible to rummage through his wardrobe in its entirety. Who knows what he still had kept - more than likely all those scarves to begin with.

She had quickly become accustomed to the kisses in time they had spent together now. Each one seemed to always be different from the last. A different emotion, a different message with each time they kissed. Her own kisses were soft and brief as if teasing him still.

From: [identity profile] rude-not-ginger.livejournal.com

She teased, he teased. They danced around each other even more. It was obvious practically from the time she sat brushing her hair and smirking at him that there was something between them. Now, finally, they were admitting it.

"I need you more than Gallifrey does," he might've said the words with a childlike pout, but considering their closeness he decided against it. "And all of Gallifrey won't...you know, argue with you as lovingly as I will."

From: [identity profile] tastefulfashion.livejournal.com

"Gallifrey may not be as such... but to leave everything behind, I couldn't do that," she answered in a soft tone. "I have responsibilities to uphold."

It would not be like her to simply throw aside all that she worked so hard to attain for the better of Gallifrey. It was difficult, though. She had no desire to leave him yet. Resting her cheek against his chest Romana wrapped her arms around his waist, taking comfort in his presence.

From: [identity profile] rude-not-ginger.livejournal.com

"I did," he said, and it was completely true. On more than one occasion. "Couldn't go back now, even if I wanted to."

That was true, though not for the same reasons. He couldn't tell her those reasons, what he said was more than enough. And what could she do but try to prevent him?

Prevention. Wait.

His face lit up and he pulled back just slightly. "Let me show you something."

From: [identity profile] tastefulfashion.livejournal.com

"But Gallifrey has changed! The Academy was opened to all races to learn an- "

Looking up as her words were cut off, Romana only stared at him with curious intent. Her embrace loosened when he pulled away.

"What is it?"

From: [identity profile] rude-not-ginger.livejournal.com

"Now, it wouldn't be a surprise if I just told you, would it?"

He offered her his hand.

"Come on, I'll show you."

From: [identity profile] tastefulfashion.livejournal.com

Her hand was small compared to his, taking it after a slight moment of hesitation.

"You're always full of surprises, Doctor."

From: [identity profile] rude-not-ginger.livejournal.com

"I do my best."

He led her down the corridors of the TARDIS, past the companion rooms and the brass bath to a large wooden door that stood out awkwardly among the coral of the rest of the TARDIS.

It was his bedroom, of course. He opened the door and the lights immediately turned on. The room was wood and brass, reflecting years of staying the same way while the rest of the TARDIS remodeled or changed. The wall was lined with clocks of varying planetary origin set to a thousand different timezones. On one end sat a washing-up station with a sink and a strop, the other end held several bookshelves and a variety of calendars. His four-poster bed stood neatly made at one corner, but he headed for the desk at the other end, covered in papers with books stacked nearly to the ceiling.

He ruffled through the papers a bit, then checked in the drawer before he found what he was looking for, a tiny gold locket on a fine chain.

"For you."

From: [identity profile] tastefulfashion.livejournal.com

A wry smile tugged at the corner of her lips. "It isn't very hard for you, really..."

She had to admit to admiring his bedroom. More often it was he that would come barging into her room rather than the other way around. Once or twice she had come in here if only to find a book missing from the library shelves that she needed to read.

When she saw the necklace in his hand, however, she could only gaze at it, surprised. "It's... it's beautiful!"

From: [identity profile] rude-not-ginger.livejournal.com

He grinned widely at her and gestured for her to approach.

"If I have to send you back," he said, "Might as well send you back with something. You know, to remember me in case it's a while until we see each other."

A fact he tucked away in his mind would not happen.

From: [identity profile] tastefulfashion.livejournal.com

"That's rather thoughtful of you, Doctor," Romana finally spoke, walking over to him.

The necklace really was beautiful. Simple, but beautiful.

From: [identity profile] rude-not-ginger.livejournal.com

"Well, I'm trying to be more thoughtful in my old age," he said. As she approached he moved behind her to clasp the necklace around her neck. The chain was very fine Ferulian dwarfgold, so while it was strong it was still quite dainty.

He brushed her hair to the side and placed the chain against the back of her neck as he locked it.

From: [identity profile] tastefulfashion.livejournal.com

"Ah, so you do admit to being old!"

She touched the locket with just the tips of her fingers, tilting her head down to admire it. It was smooth and felt cool against her skin. "... Thank you."

From: [identity profile] rude-not-ginger.livejournal.com

"Older than a novice like you, maybe," he teased.

He'd acquired the locket many years prior. Many many years ago. A different regeneration altogether. It would be good for her. Superb, in fact.

He pressed a kiss to the exposed skin of her neck. Gentle and quick.

"It's my pleasure, Romana."

From: [identity profile] tastefulfashion.livejournal.com

And to that she could huff with as much dignity as could be expected in response. "Uh-huh."

It tickled where he kissed her skin. Reaching over her shoulder, threading her fingers in his hair, she pressed one to his lips that was just as quick.

From: [identity profile] rude-not-ginger.livejournal.com

And to that? He threaded his own fingers in her hair and brought her back for a proper kiss. Deep and slow, emotional and only a tad bit desperate. Not unlike their relationship (the desperation seemed to always be a trait of his, though).

Kissing her in the TARDIS, outside of the TARDIS...in the many places they were learning to kiss was one thing. This was his bedroom and made the entire situation seem that much more intimate. Terrifyingly so.

From: [identity profile] tastefulfashion.livejournal.com

She was aware of this fact as well. Pulling her lips from his just enough, she couldn't help but to speak his name softly.

Deep down she really did care for him. It was frightening even for her to admit it, but she did love him. First pressing a kiss to his lips again they moved to the corner of his mouth then to his cheek.

She kissed his cheek and he returned the gesture then followed it with a kiss to her earlobe. Quick and gentle. He was ridiculously nervous all of a sudden, the bravado he had when kissing her neck before was gone. It was as if he suddenly realized this was all for real.

He murmured her name again. It was a reassurance, remembering that this was real and the woman he held was alive and desired to be with him.

His other hand eventually settled on her shoulder. Touching her, staying connected in some way.

From: [identity profile] tastefulfashion.livejournal.com

"Doctor... I want to stay as long as I can."

The words were spoken before she could stop herself. It was the truth, though. As soon as she had spoken she kissed his other cheek again. Being close to him was comforting to her.

From: [identity profile] rude-not-ginger.livejournal.com

He nodded, very slowly. He wanted her to stay. Not just the plans he'd made for the near future, but now. He wanted her to stay now. It was just shy of never that he let someone in, that he gave in to emotional or sexual desires.

And right now, he wanted...well, he wanted Romana to stay. And it was something she wanted too. Romana wasn't one to say she wanted something when she didn't, it was one of her many charming traits.

He took a slow step backwards towards the bed, keeping Romana with him as he moved. Terrified inside that she might change her mind. Terrified that he might.

From: [identity profile] tastefulfashion.livejournal.com

Soon enough she would have to go back to Gallifrey. She would have to walk away from him yet again to go back to being the President, a leader, a figure that held power not only among the Time Lords but before other races as well. The responsibilities would be waiting for.

But until then she was only Romana. Just another person who wanted nothing more than to be in the company of someone who she cared for. When the time came she would go. In the time now, she would stay with him.

Following his steps there was no trace of doubt in her eyes when she looked into his eyes. She held onto his hand and kissed him again, gently, carefully.

From: [identity profile] rude-not-ginger.livejournal.com

She didn't doubt him. Funny, he always doubted himself. And now, here they were. On the verge of...something, and she was trusting him completely.

She kissed him and he held her close, deepening their kiss with all the gentleness she initiated it with. Lovingly, though he'd never use that word aloud.

Oh, it was long ago he admitted to himself that he loved Romana. Long ago he admitted it and shushed himself, saying that it was one of those things he'd never be able to have, now. Something he should've fought for when he had time. Someone he should've fought for.

From: [identity profile] tastefulfashion.livejournal.com

All those years ago, when the Doctor had received word from Gallifrey, summoning her back to their home, she had been distraught over the news. She loved traveling in the TARDIS and, she had not completely understood it then as she did now, loved him as well. But when she had turned to him all he could say was that he was going to bring her back.

It was then that she had begun to doubt her own feelings for the man. He was just supposed to be some silly mentor for her to assist. But it became more without either of them realizing it. And now, kissing him, feeling the form of his body against her own as he held her, there was only trust.

She had followed him then and she would follow him now.
