Mercury. Not exactly the most entertaining of planets, but certainly one of the most peaceful. With the atmospheric generator setting up a heat and pressure field around where he sat outside the TARDIS, it was actually quite nice.

He had two white wicker chairs and a table set up outside the TARDIS, with a pot of tea and two cups and saucers out.

After all, he had a date arriving.

Well, not really a date.

Just Romana.

Still! No reason not to put a little effort out!

It was really about time for him to turn the tables on the situation anyway. She was much smaller than him (a feat, considering how thin this incarnation was), and he easily wrapped his arms around her and flipped them over, him on top. He leaned on one arm and grinned down at her.

"You're beautiful."

It was the first thing that came to his mind, seeing her lying like this with him.

The switch took her by surprise for only a second. Looking up at him and smiling back, her hands reached up to settle on his shoulders. He did have a bit of advantage now, but it wasn't much. At least that was what she thought.

This new incarnation of him was certainly different from all the others she had met. Definitely cheekier.

"It took you quite some time to notice that," Romana teased.

"Yeah, around...ooooh, thirty seconds or so," he nodded. "But how long it took to admit it, that's the proper question."

He ran his fingertips down her arms, almost as if he was mapping out her skin with his touches. He followed his fingertip touches with his lips. A different sense, this time, taste rather than touch.

It was difficult, for him, to be both a lover and the Doctor at the same time. To try to keep himself who he always had been and still be someone new for her.

"Mmm, well, considering how stubborn you typically are in admitting certain opinions, it isn't that much of a surprise."

Watching him, her skin tingled just ever so slightly under his touches and kisses. They were such simple gestures and yet she had never found herself enjoying anything as much as she did this. He was gentle.

And he was handsome.

In all the centuries she had known him, she had watched his regenerations progressively become younger and younger. Of course the thought of him doing this to make up for his old age crossed her mind, and it had earned her a grin in the past. Her old habit of over-analyzing matters did rear its head from time to time though and she could only wonder. Not that she was complaining about his appearance now.

With a slight tug on the shoulder of his shirt, a hint of that sly smile she used ever so rarely could be seen. "Though, I do believe that you have the slight advantage."

He leaned back and shrugged off his suit jacket, letting it fall in a heap on the floor. How long had it been since he'd been undressed with someone else? A very, very long time. And Romana, well, in comparison to him she was so young and inexperienced. It didn't feel wrong to undress with her, but it did feel strange.

He tugged off his tie.

"I'm terribly out of practice," he admitted. Had he told her that before? He thought he probably had.

She took the moment to prop herself up on her elbows and then to sitting up as well as she could, the necklace around her neck catching the light. Her fingers took hold of the first button of his shirt to unfasten it.

"They say that practice makes perfect," she pointed out. A beat later, she added, "Am I making you uncomfortable?"

"No," he replied, quickly. And then, a little quieter, "No, no, it's not you. I'm just not certain what you're expecting. Worried I won't live up to it."

Which was ridiculously honest, especially for him.

But that didn't mean he didn't want to. He leaned forward and pressed a kiss to her earlobe again, then another to her jaw. After all, if she was taking away the advantage he had of being clothed, he had to fight back somehow!

Making slow work of the first few buttons she drew back her hands to rest them on his hips. Again the kisses were a bit a distracting for her, but not enough for her to respond in a gentle tone.

"Doctor, you have never been anything else but yourself around me."

She started to press kisses of her own to his cheek, hands traveling up his sides and then behind his shoulders.

"I expect nothing less and nothing more of you."

His hand slid up her torso as his lips trailed down her sternum, to her stomach. He tried to rationalize why he was nervous, what it was that he needed to calm. Besides a few dozen classes in sexuality to refresh his memory.

His fingertips went up her cheek and rested on her temple. Something that would let him know what she desired, and could show her how he felt. And it had been so long since he'd connected with someone of his own species. Too long.

Even as his lips hung just above her bellybutton, he opened his mind to hers, to connect if she desired.

The silent invitation was accepted, opening her mind to him in return without hesitation. Her inner-most thoughts were suddenly there for him to feel. How the feel of his lips against her skin was teasing her, encouraging him further.

Opening this connection was just another way of her showing to him just how much she trusted him, despite the disagreements they had had in the past.

His name left her lips in a soft whisper.

Disagreements, shmisagreements, she was still Romana and he was still the Doctor. That meant something. If they could re-meet so often during his lifetime when he rarely saw another companion after they left him...well, it meant something.

She connected to him, and the sensation was wonderful. He could feel her trust in him; her desire. He returned those emotions with desire of his own, of longing and adoration. She was Romana! The one that got away that he never, ever forgot.

He unbuttoned her jeans slowly. It was practically impossible to tug them down with one hand to her temple to keep them connected.

There was that old saying she remembered hearing once, possibly from the Doctor himself, about how absence makes the heart grow fonder. In their case she could feel it within both of their hearts that it was more than true.

With her free hand she resumed the task of unbuttoning his shirt as she felt him pull at the jeans. She shifted some, elevating her hips just enough to make it a bit easier for him.

Never did she think she would open up to anyone like this. His emotions entwining with her own, to say it was intimate could not even begin to describe this.

The Doctor stared up at the wood ceiling. It was higher than the last time he stared at it, the TARDIS was redecorating itself. Why, oh, why, did it have to start with his room each time? Just when he thought he was getting used to something...

One arm wrapped around Romana's shoulders as they lay together. Another thing that was changing. Had changed. Changed. It was different, now. Though he didn't think it was changed in a bad way, not remotely, it was just...well, it was different. Very different.

And he loved her. He knew it, even if he was probably unable to say it. He pressed a kiss to the crown of her head.

The feeling of his lips was enough to stir her from the short little nap she had lapsed into. There was a small sound to be heard as her eyes fluttered open, shifting some so that she was lying on her side.

It was nice, waking to another presence instead of being alone in the bed. It was something, she thought, she could get used to if her hectic life could ever really allow it.

A warm smile graced her lips, murmuring a soft greeting to the Doctor before pressing a quick kiss of her own to his cheek.

"You don't have to get up just yet," he said. "It's still early."

A pause.

"You know, somewhere."

She was so comforting as she slept. A warm presence that made him feel...well, he didn't feel alone. And he'd had lovers in the past that couldn't make him feel this way. It had to just be Romana. Difficult woman that she was, she fit with him. She made him feel...like he belonged somewhere.

Propping herself up by her elbow, fingers curling into a loose grip against the side of her head, Romana just smiled at him still, albeit a little sleepy on her part.

"And it's always late somewhere else," came the instant reply. She really could not help the need to get in the last word some times.

"Yes, but it's not really all that late in another place," he countered. His smirk widened.

From: [identity profile] tastefulfashion.livejournal.com

"And yet in that other place that is not too far off, it has jumped from being late to have completely forgotten what the time really was to begin with," she pointed out with a grin.

From: [identity profile] rude-not-ginger.livejournal.com

"Very true. Which means you're so late by now, Romana, there's no real point in going just yet."

He leaned up and pressed a kiss to the side of her mouth.

From: [identity profile] tastefulfashion.livejournal.com

All she could do was roll her eyes in response before stealing a quick kiss to settle their little banter.

"One thing always leads to another with you, doesn't it?"

From: [identity profile] rude-not-ginger.livejournal.com

"It's a chain reaction, Romana. Can't deny that's the way that the universe moves."

Was he smug? Oh, just a little bit. He felt like he won that mini-banter.

From: [identity profile] tastefulfashion.livejournal.com

Well, she could give him the benefit of winning it. Oh, she had a retort in mind, but preferred to let him be smug for a bit. Later on she'll come up with something to bring the score to her favor.

Settling on running her fingers through his ruffled hair she pressed another short kiss to his lips. "Well, either way, it would seem that you have me around for a little while longer."

From: [identity profile] rude-not-ginger.livejournal.com

"Good. I was only just getting used to you lying here with me."

Which wasn't true, actually. He was fairly certain he was used to her presence the moment she was there. Which was terrifying, also.

He tucked a lock of her hair behind her ear.

Lying there beside him, it was any wonder how she had left him and Adric behind all those years ago at the Gate. With the complications that was her life now Romana could only dream of this sort of calm.

"Didn't you mention something earlier about ice-skating?" She asked. Not that she wouldn't mind spending more time until then just remaining where she was.

From: [identity profile] rude-not-ginger.livejournal.com

"Oh, absolutely," the Doctor replied with an emphatic nod. "And Christmas! Been too long since I've had a Christmas, and you have yet to have one. Wonder if there's somewhere I could have a proper turkey dinner ordered from..."

But he was one who liked to experience everything about a holiday at once. Which made Halloween a very painful holiday when he decided to try every candy he trick-or-treated at once.
