Christmas Eve. 2009.

The Doctor loved Christmas! Back when he was a wee Time Lord, the first place he ever landed was London on Christmas Eve. He promised himself he'd never miss another Christmas ever, but that promise went into the same pile as "Lose weight" and "Regenerate a better hairline" and "Stop leaving companions in other universes". But the Doctor had never quite gotten the hang of New Years'. (He once spent several hours commiserating on the similarity between the confusing nature of New Years and Thursdays with one Arthur Dent, who will sadly not be appearing in this piece of narrative. -editor)

But! Through all his travels in space and time, he still hadn't quite figured out what Christmas was for exactly. Except as a yearly excuse for turkey, too much wine, and plum pudding (all of which the Doctor approved of). This year, though, as he strode the streets on this wonderful Christmas Eve, the Doctor decided he would figure out exactly what Christmas was all about.

This may or may not have included use of a intergalactic manipulative detector and a full pack of radio stellar isotopian crystals. Oh, and a cup of hot chocolate. In a festively-coloured cup.

There was a lovely light snow, and the Doctor grinned madly at the stars. Christmas. This year, he was going to figure out what it was all about.

"Well, depends on what time you're traveling to. By the 51st century, the whole notion of sexuality is completely abandoned. Everyone's up for grabs. Literally, in some areas of the universe. Lost my last good suit to that sector of space the last time I landed there. Whew."

He turned to Gabriel and gave him a nod. "We'll see, we'll see." Which meant 'absolutely, just need to find one!' in Doctor-speak. "Still got some readings to take in."

The device gave a small, irritated beep.

"Huh."

"I thought it might. Even now people are sort of..." He trailed off and waved his hand a bit, as though that would explain what was going through his mind in that moment that he couldn't find the words to explain with. "You know."

Of course, throughout the year Gabriel had come to realise just what that meant, which lead to an amused eye roll. "Of course, the readings."

A frown appeared on his face though at the beep, and even more so the 'huh'.

"Huh what?

"Non-terrestrial activity," the Doctor said, turning a dial. He looked over to Gabriel, a little guiltily. "I may have set this detector to check, just in case.

In the Doctor's defence, that was how many of his Christmases turned out!

"But! This way!"

"And here I thought that this little stop off in my present day New York was supposed to be a vacation." A glower followed that, lips pressed together in a thin line for a moment, before letting out a huff of a breath. "But, right. Where is it?"

Of course it was, but the plan had been for him to show his Christmas, but oh well. Christmas never really went as planned for anyone.

"Right behind you, Doctor."

The Doctor turned a corner. "It is a holiday!" the Doctor said. "See? Holiday spirit, relaxing time, just---checking up on something! Probably going to turn out to be nothing at all! Don't worry!"

The Doctor could do enough worrying for the both of them.

He turned a corner, finding a large, sparkling ice skating rink covered in people. Any one of them could've been the one setting the radar off. A Graske, maybe? Maybe not? So difficult to tell!
