The Doctor flipped a few final switches on the TARDIS console, adding the information he'd just recieved about Aislinn into the systems, should he ever run across another muse like her again. Well, he doubted it would be exactly like her, but...the same genus at least.

He turned, picking up the teacups that were left behind. Funny, he would've thought Rose would've been back by now. The sound of a familiar key in the lock made him look up. Speak of the devil...

"Everywhere," she offered. "Anywhere. It was all there for you to choose from, if this machine works as you say it does."

"But this is where I wished to be," he said simply.

Reinette smiled at the newest stranger to enter her life again, having thr strangest urge to introduce him to Voltaire and the rest of the artists that she filled her days with.

"Then, again, I must be flattered."

Byron grinned at her, a flash of the young man he'd been once taking over the cynicism of age in his eyes.

"I am pleased you find it flattering instead of pretentious."

Reinette tilted her head. "That would mean complicating emtotions more than they are. And I find that like is complicated more than enough, in its current state. Especially here."

"Anywhere, more like. It's no simpler elsewhere." Nothing was simple, not emotions, not thoughts, not experience or explanation.

Reinette openly considered such things, specific experince supporting his point.

"No," she agreed softly. "It is not."

He moved to cover the hand on his arm with his other, not caring if it was familiar. The conversation had moved beyond that.

"But some things we can try and simplify, at least. That much is within our power."

"You sound extremely decisive," she observed, continung their walk back up the gallery. "What would you like to simplify then?"

"About some things..."

He glanced at her with a slight smile. "If I could simplify my reasons for being here, I think it would be helpful for all involved."

"You speak of such an event as if the outcome is not possible," Reinette observed, watching how his words were reflected on his features. "Just who all is involved, that you wish to help them?"

"Myself. My...companions on this venture. You, even. A strange man shows up from across time merely to speak to you. You must want to know why."

"Truthfully?" Reinette was always one to admit to the truth. "As first I assumed your appearance must have something to do with the Monsters. There have been many arrivals and departures in my life, and all of them connected by the ticking men. But now? Having met you? I cannot seem to think that anymore. You have a very -- unique air, do you not?"

"The Monsters?" He gave her a quizzical look. "No, I don't believe I know of any connection to any...ticking men."

He smiled a little at the unique comment. "Do you think so?"

"The Monsters," Reinette explained,"that have been with me since my childhood. They always come. The years lull you into beliving it is done, but it never is." He deserved the explination she supposed, since Reinette had insinuated Byron might be one of them. Yet the words felt odd, in their air. It was not a topic she spoke of often. She found herself returning his smile.

"I am known to be an expert on unique, and you sir? Are surely that."

He smiled a little at her comment. "It has been said more than once, yet. Not usually in such an approving tone."

The smile shifted to a frown as he considered her explanation. "One such as you should not be plagued by Monsters, Madame...Is there nothing to be done?"

"There are many that do not always approve of me," Reinette teased warmly. "So I think we manage to keep good company there." Their walk slowed as they reached a low table. Marble and delicate curved legs spoke of true craftsmenship, and in truth it was as much art as the paintings on the walls. On it sat a delicate clock, its hands keeping perfect time. Reinette considered it.

"I am not sure than anything can be done." It was the few aspects of her life in which Reinette had little to no control. "I watch, and I wait. I try to learn from those that know more than I do. Sometimes, when I wake in the morning, I am sure they must have come. It is nothing more than a blur of color in my head, so it is hard to say."

Reinette composed herself once more, finding her smile.

"Perhaps nothing is done because I do not truly wish it so. Perhaps I want to see what happens next."

He grinned at that. "I often have that feeling. Which is possibly why most don't approve of me. The constant wondering of just what will happen depending on which choice, and often choosing the less ... proper one, just to see what they will do about it." The "they" he was sure she would understand.

And it reflected a little too closely on his being there with her. On the conversation. The things he thought and the things he wanted and the things he was willing to do to get them. Half of it was wondering just what would happen if he did.

Reinette laughed, turning away from the clock and walking again. "I have often wondered," she confessed, still laughing. "Why it was such a nessecery thing for me to be so very proper, so that I may in turn do very improper things with Louis."

"Because Society is made of hypocrites." There was bitterness lacing his tone, and the sure knowledge of someone who had had that hypocrisy turned on him one too many times.

Reinette caught his tone, was both aware of, and understood it. And she arched one, lone eyebrow.

"Perhaps, my lord, that is true. But we never let them know that we care."

"Oh, gods no," Byron was horrified at the very idea. "No matter what they say because we seem not to."

Reinette nodded, her expression one of complete agreement.

"And they do love to talk about us, do they not?"

"So much one has to wonder what they'd talk about were we not around." He gave her a wry smile.

Reinette's eyes flared especially bright.

"Why," she offered. "The fact that we are not to be found of course."
