Someone once told me the only way that drama can really break your heart is if there are those moments of happiness and mundaneness in between. Because if it's all climax, action, drama, it begins to lose it's meaning and impact.
So the happy moment in Who are like that a bit. The calm before the storm. Which makes the heartbreak and angst and doom even harder for Ten the character and us the viewer.
So Ten, complete and total barrel of fun and laughs. He's like a litter of kittens.
