• THE DOCTOR LEARNS THE TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS

~~

Christmas Eve. 2009.

The Doctor loved Christmas! Back when he was a wee Time Lord, the first place he ever landed was London on Christmas Eve. He promised himself he'd never miss another Christmas ever, but that promise went into the same pile as "Lose weight" and "Regenerate a better hairline" and "Stop leaving companions in other universes". But the Doctor had never quite gotten the hang of New Years'. (He once spent several hours commiserating on the similarity between the confusing nature of New Years and Thursdays with one Arthur Dent, who will sadly not be appearing in this piece of narrative. -editor)

But! Through all his travels in space and time, he still hadn't quite figured out what Christmas was for exactly. Except as a yearly excuse for turkey, too much wine, and plum pudding (all of which the Doctor approved of). This year, though, as he strode the streets on this wonderful Christmas Eve, the Doctor decided he would figure out exactly what Christmas was all about.

This may or may not have included use of a intergalactic manipulative detector and a full pack of radio stellar isotopian crystals. Oh, and a cup of hot chocolate. In a festively-coloured cup.

There was a lovely light snow, and the Doctor grinned madly at the stars. Christmas. This year, he was going to figure out what it was all about.

"Brilliant. You do that, and I'll---"

The Doctor's brilliant plan would've been made more brilliant if he managed to complete it. But, without warning, a branch-like tentacle slipped out of the water and hooked itself around his leg, pulling him down to the ice with a loud smack before slowly pulling him towards the water.

Well, crap. Luckily, the panicking civilians knew enough to get the hell off the ice, so she could devote her attention to dealing with this. There had to be some kind of guiding intelligence behind this, and it had to understand enough to know that the Doctor was planning to unmask, because just happening to come up for a snack right then would have been too much of a coincidence.

So at least even bothering to shout "Let him go!" while she pulled her phaser out and aimed it at the tentacle wasn't completely stupid or anything. Probably.

"Jim, just run!" the Doctor called, scraping his hands against the ice in an effort to try to get a grip. Just as he felt his feet go under the water, the tentacle released, now dashing towards its new, armed threat.

"Like hell I will!"

At least the window of time between releasing the Doctor and reaching her left it open for the phaser without fear of stunning the Doctor as well.

The first shot stunned the monster, but a fresh set of tentacles flew up next, branches splayed out like claws.

The Doctor scrambled to his feet and leapt forward, trying to grab Jim by the middle and pull her to safety.

She certainly wasn't going to stop him, but good luck with her lack of ice legs there. (She was really starting to hate ice.)

The Doctor slipped on the ice and fell on his shoulder hard. He could feel the thin ice give with the force of his fall.

"Look out!" Another tentacle came shooting towards them.

Oh, hell. Well, phaser's better than nothing, but they need a better plan before they're grabbed or the ice gives out.

"Any ideas beyond that?"
