"Bit of kit that came through the rift, Alex used it, he saw the future, God knows what it was he saw, but he said it was a mercy killing. Said we weren't ready. Guess we weren't. I was there and there was nothing I could do. Way to roll in the new century, huh? Midnight December 31st, 1999. Bang. Quite literally."
He shook his head. Time was those facts haunted him. He was there and he should have stopped it. He should have helped Alex. But he'd had so much more tragedy since that it almost seemed to blend together. He could almost pretend it wasn't him. Just an observation on some other life.
"Oh come on, you're the most aloof guy I know, Mister Time Lord. Mind you, guess current evidence suggests otherwise." He winked at him slightly, and went on. "Aloof like I am. Well, not quite like I am. You do it better than I do. Usually."
He wasn't quite sure he was getting across what he meant, so instead he changed the subject by tapping him on the arm and pointing towards a spot of grass that managed to be more green than brown. "Come on, lets sit down."
Shrugging out of his coat, he lay it down on the ground and sat himself down on it.
